The main cause of periorbital dark circles is because the skin under your eyes is thinner than anywhere else on your body and shows the blood vessels and the blood they contain.
As we get older our skin loses its elasticity and ability to regenerate, which makes periorbital dark circles more visible. This is why dark circles are more visible in the elderly.
The reason people think you must be tired when you have darker than normal bags under your eyes is because when the body is tired it produces extra Cortisol to keep you awake. Cortisol increases the amount of blood flowing in your body and causes your veins to expand in order to contain it. That includes the blood vessels under your eyes.
If you’re thinking “I’m young, and get plenty of sleep and I still have very dark circles under my eyes” you could be one of the many people who are just genetically predisposed to dark periorbital circles.
